Nationwide economic recovery is under way, according to the statistical trend lines examined by Alan Beaulieu.

That's the good news.

"This is not a bubble. This is not a sugar high caused by the government," the New Hampshire economist said Monday speaking to the Economic Club of Grand Rapids. "This is real. This is sustainable."

But the recovery also figures to be a slow rise with no sharp spike to mirror the recession that proved to be "steeper than we thought," Beaulieu told an audience of about 500 businesspeople.

"We're not looking at anything near a 'V(-shaped recovery)," said Beaulieu, senior analyst at the Institute for Trend Research. "We're looking at a broad-based 'U.'

"Nobody should expect this is going to be a quick turnaround. The United States will not be returning to the peak from which we have fallen until probably 2017."

Alan Beaulieu has been named Chief Economist for Heating, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Distributors International (HARDI). Prior to the appointment, Mr. Beaulieu worked with the organization for over a year on their economic positioning, producing a monthly HVACR sales trend report for distributors, as well as providing general economic trending information, presenting keynotes for HARDI national and regional meetings, and writing articles for HARDI publications.
